A Geisha's Journey is an exquisite look a young girl's life as she
devotes it to becoming a true Japanese geisha. She began her actual
training at age 15. This book contains the narrative that describes her
journey from when she was born in Mexico of Japanese parents to
becoming a full fledged geiko. The
details are fascinating, a look at a way of life of which is unique and
special to Japan. It shows the heart of the young girl who wants to
learn and preserve a part of her heritage. She tells in her own words
the work and joy that went into her progress from the early days as an
apprentice to her feeling of freedom when she becomes a geiko. The
anonymity of the maiko gives way to her uniqueness, her own
personality. Her love for her choice, her desire to continue the
traditions that are in danger of disappearing form Japanese culture
shines through with every word.
The outstanding part of this book is its many, many photographs that
chronicle Komomo's development and every aspect of her life.
Photographer Naoyuki Ogino was allowed access rarely granted to the
culture of the geishas. He has taken advantage of this opportunity to
create beautiful photos that portray the words of Komomo perfectly.
Many of them are reproduced as full page or two page spreads to show
every minute detail. All phases of the process are covered, both
private moments and public ceremonies. Breath taking in scope and
skill.
The combination of words and photography lead to unprecedent access and
understanding of this special Japanese tradition.
