Being a fan of mystery, this story did not disappoint.  There were many parts to this story, lots of twists and turns, as well as a few surprises along the way.

Once a police chief, Sid Chance is now a private investigator.  After being set up and accused of accepting bribes, which ultimately ended his career as a police chief, Sid is trying to stay occupied. Sid’s newest case involves a business that is located in Ashland City.  The business that used to occupy the area was called Auto Parts Rehabbers. The new business, HarrCo shipping Plant is being accused of dumping a dangerous chemical, trichloroethylene (TCE) onto the land.  This chemical has seeped into the drinking water and caused problems for the townspeople such as deformities, cancer, and other horrible things.  The townspeople are holding HarrCo Company responsible.  Desperate to clear their name, they hired Sid to find out where the chemicals came from and who dumped them there all those years ago.

Sid finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of lies, deceptions, and even threats. With the help of his good friend and side kick Jazz Lemieux, they are both able to uncover some terrible truths.  As Sid and Jazz delve further into the case, they find that Auto Parts Rehabbers was run by a bunch of convicts and that they were the ones responsible for the chemical spill. Trying to find proof of that, and trying to actually find these people who worked for that company, proves to be very difficult.  When Sid gets a late night visit from some men who are looking to send him a warning message, Sid starts to realize how tough this case is going to be.

As much as I like a good mystery, I also am a romantic.  Sensing chemistry between Sid and Jazz right from the get go, I kept hoping something would happen between the two of them.  I was a bit disappointed in the end to find that the subtle hints given to the readers went no further.

What I did like was the clear and concise way of Chester D. Campbell’s writing.  Even though there are many different events happening at once, he allows the reader to stay with him throughout the story and not make us lost or confused. I would recommend this story to any mystery lovers out there who like the twists and turns of a good mystery; an excellent read!
