After reading the first three books in the series I have concluded that not only young adult fantasy readers will love P. L. Blair’s Portal series but adult readers will as well. The books are a refreshing change from the norm where fantasy is concerned. This cross-genre series blends the ages-old detective novel with a unique twist on a fantasy world co-existing and interacting with the modern day world we all know and love.

In book 1, Shadow Path, we learn of the portals that exist between a realm of fantastical creatures, once thought to be fairy tales, and our own world. We also meet our heroine, Kat, who along with her Elvin partner, Tevis—who work for the Corpus Christi, Texas, police department. After discovering the dead body of an Ogre, the partners become involved in a race to stop a deadly Necromancer, practitioner of the darkest arts, once known to Tevis as a former lover whose ultimate target is Tevis himself!

In book 2, Stormcaller, Tlaloc, ancient god of the storms, rains, and disease, decides to make Corpus Christi his new home. Kat and Tevis team up with the Wizard  Arvandus and a half-human, half-Lovetalker named Gairth to stop him. The trail to Tlaloc’s lair leads them to the other side of the portal to the fantasy world where we learn some new things about Kat. We also learn that not only does Tlaloc demand human sacrifice, but he also desires Kat—for his new bride!

Book 3, Deathtalker, Kat and her team investigate the killings of a creature born with no soul. The unique team of Kat, Tevis Arvandus, and Gairth  must find this killer of strong, intelligent women whose only mistake was to fall in love with him.
