When God
When God Created My Toes

Dandi Daley Mackall; Illustrated By: David Hohn

Review by A. E. Jaskiewicz

Children have vivid imaginations.  So, as they make their way through the book, ‘When God Created My Toes’, their imaginations can go into overdrive.  They can imagine what it was like on the day God created them.  They can imagine what it was like when he created everything about them, from the top of their head right down to their toes.  And that is sure to keep their minds working for a while.

At the beginning of ‘When God Created My Toes’ we see the title as the opening line.  Then, questions follow.  “Did he make them wiggle?  Did he know I’d giggle?”  As the story goes on, we get the same treatment for much of the body.  As we move up the body from the toes to the head, we stop at various body parts and have similar questions as with the toes.  Plus, the story is told completely in rhyme, to help make it even more fun for kids.

The idea of the story is a good one for kids.  It is sure to fire up their imagination and have them thinking about the day that God created them and the different parts of their body.  The book is written in a way that it sounds like it could be any child asking these questions, and that is something that is really going to be appealing to them.  Children are going to have lots of fun, even just imaging answers to the questions posed throughout the book.  Plus, it gives good, simple answers to children’s questions about where they came from, and how God created them.

The illustrations in the book really help bring the text to life.  As an action is talked about from each body part, be it toes wiggling or hands clapping, we can see the child in the book doing the actions described.  This is particularly helpful to younger kids who may not understand everything in the book.  Plus, it may make some slightly older readers want to play out what the child in the book is doing for some added fun.

The language used in the book comes across as very child friendly.  You can actually imagine a child asking these questions about themselves and the day that God created them.  And, it can even give children a little learning experience about various parts of their own bodies and what they do.

‘When God Created My Toes’ is a fun book that offers good, simple answers to kids about how God created them.  Plus, it is also good for helping kids use their imaginations, and it gives them a little bit of simple, straight-forward learning about their body.
